Women’s Empowerment Initiatives: Are They Really a Step Forward?

In the wake of the recent headline-grabbing news that the United States could have its first female President in 2024, what are the (potentially historic) implications for women and girls? What is the current state of women in our country and in our community? Are traditional empowerment initiatives making the desired impact?

Join us at our offices in Downtown Columbia for the next event in our Candid Conversations small group interactive discussion series, as we explore timely issues to spark transparent dialogue, build connections, and bridge the gaps among community members.

We are delighted to welcome Anne Brinker, COO of the Horizon Foundation, as our Chief Facilitating Officer for this discussion. Topics our conversation may address include:

  • Can women “have it all”? What about mothers? In two-parent working households, can both have it all, or does something/someone have to give? Is this sustainable?
  • How do generational changes in societal norms and gender roles impact women today?
  • Are women’s empowerment initiatives making the desired impact, or are they plagued by oversaturation, a perception of serving only as lip service, and a trend towards virtue signaling?
  • As community members, business owners, and individuals, what is our role in effectively supporting women? How can we approach constructive conversations about this topic?
